Roof Restoration and Painting: A Step-By-Step Guide

This is an easy process of roof restoration and painting your valuable roof.

When it comes to roof restoration, Melbourne homeowners know it’s better to be safe than sorry.  Australian’s roofs have to endure harsh climates that decrease their life expectancies.  That’s why it’s so important for homeowners to know all the steps involved in roofing restoration and roof painting.

The procedures for both are very similar as are the procedures if you’re restoring cement tile roofing or terracotta tile roofing.  Below is a step-by-step guide to roof restoration and painting.  Also included are the extra steps needed for successful terracotta tile roof restoration.

1.  Remove broken roof tiles and replace them with a tile of the same age, color, and type.
2.  If you have a terracotta roof, apply a product that removes moss and fungus.
3.  Pressure wash your entire roof as well as your gutters and the external walls of your home.
4.  Replace, repair, and/or treat all valley irons.
5.  Repair or replace lead flashing.
6.  Repair or replace timber battens.
7.  Strip ride capping and gable end tiles and then re-bed.
8.  Re-point all ridge caps and gable caps.
9.  Air-blow your entire roof.
10. Apply one or two coats of sealer.
11. If you have a terracotta roof, apply two coats of a high quality glaze or stop clear.
12. For cement roofs only: apply two coats of acrylic roof tile coating.
13. If you have a terracotta roof, paint your roof with two coats of a quality finish.
14. Paint flashing and gable caps.
15. Have your roof inspected.

Roof Painting Tips
Before one drop of paint hits your roof make sure you plan your escape. The last thing you want to do is paint yourself into a corner.  Before painting your roof, you should check your local weather forecast.  In other words, don’t paint if it’s going rain.  Also, winds can carry paint droplets a considerable distance.  If you’re not careful you could end up painting your neighbor’s house.

If you are not sure that you can effectively and efficiently work following the guide, you are free to ask for help from roof restoration and painting service contractor.

I hope that this post give you insights to prepare yourself when the need arise.

I cannot tell you how many times I have done this while painting, or even mopping a floor (although mopping is not as difficult, the concept is the same!). With all that said, sometimes a professional is the way to go on projects as important as these. Regardless, very informative post!

It seems that leaving broken shingles on a roof might lead to further damage. I also liked your tip to pressure wash it since having a clean roof that's free of moss could probably help to prevent damage. Thanks for posting this!
